I'll never forget building that 2-seat 9 car in your backyard with you and your dad when I kept hitting my head on that tree and I was giving him a hard time...."damnit Lloyd, trim your trees!" I'll always remember those good times with him...He was an awesome guy and he will be missed.

He took part in football, basketball and soccer. In his spare time he liked building model airplanes and racing go-karts.

When Lloyd was thirteen, change was brought to his life with the divorce of his parents. His family was expanded by his father’s remarriage to Wanda Jo Babcock, which gave him two new sisters, Cristal Dawn and Elizabeth Jane. This new family unit celebrated Arlo and Wanda’s marriage with a group honeymoon trip to Disneyland.

Lloyd’s next five years were split attending school in Topeka and Las Vegas. These school years were filled with football, basketball and soccer. While growing up Lloyd had many friends. He continued to maintain these friendships and cultivated new ones through work and hobbies later in life. Some of his best friends were Evelyn & Danny DeHart, Mark Betzold, Rodney Atherly, Mike O’Neill, Roger Ruhlow, and Mikey Gluskin. Friends and acquaintances found Lloyd an easy man to get to know, with a relaxed approach to life in general. He was uncomplicated and straight forward in his relationships.

Known to others as a focused, logical, and somewhat driven individual, Lloyd was able to utilize these qualities to succeed in high school. He was good with facts and figures, and had an excellent memory. He mainly attended high school at Topeka High School in Topeka, Kansas with only one year (his junior year) spent at Rancho High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. He enjoyed some courses more than others, and was involved in many sports. He also held various jobs throughout high school. His favorite classes were Math and History.

Immediately following his graduation from Topeka High School in 1972 he moved to Scott City, Kansas to work for his grandfather at the family business. This move proved fortuitous as this is where he met his future wife. Lloyd married Brenda Kay Trent on December 22, 1973 at the First Baptist Church of Scott City. Shortly thereafter Lloyd and Brenda moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and began the next chapter of their lives. He took a job at 19 with the Parks & Recreation Department for the City of North Las Vegas. Lloyd and Brenda celebrated the birth of their son, Ken Arlo Thatcher on May 17th, 1977. It was also during this time that Lloyd began his career as a Public Servant for the Clark County Department of Public Works.

Lloyd was a flexible worker who was able to draw the best from others around him. A persuasive individual who was quick to make necessary decisions, Lloyd’s strengths included being able to think on his feet. He could be a leader who sought impact for his decisions and he was a good negotiator with the contractors and enjoyed new challenges.

The late 1970’s brought confusion and heartache by way of divorce. This separation, however, was short-lived, as Lloyd and Brenda remarried. This time also brought the joy of the addition of their daughter, Heather Bree Thatcher on August 2nd, 1979. The next decade brought enjoyment to Lloyd’s life as he and Brenda raised their young family, participated in bowling leagues, stock-car racing and off-road racing. Lloyd closed this chapter with a final divorce from Brenda in 1988.

Lloyd and Brenda continued to co-parent over the next decade. As they raised their children, Lloyd became a member of the Southern Nevada Off-Road Racing Enthusiasts, SNORE, instilling his own love of off-road racing to his son Ken Arlo, continuing a family tradition started decades earlier by his own father. During this time Lloyd advanced in his career, and eventually retired from Public Service in 2000. He used logical analysis of his retirement options in order to ensure his retirement would be fulfilling.

After retirement he remained in Las Vegas, and easily adapted to his life of leisure by taking part in various hobbies. Along with racing, his favorite pursuits were watching football and basketball, bowling and the action at the casinos. He was content to enjoy his hobbies alone but was also willing to share his interests with others. Throughout these retirement years, Lloyd continued to be an active member of SNORE.

Travel and vacations were experiences that Lloyd truly enjoyed. He was partial to vacations that were casual and laid back usually found by visits to family and friends both near and far. He made a point to participate in all of his school reunions in Topeka and enjoyed reconnecting with school friends.

Lloyd was a lover of animals and cherished his pets. Lloyd’s favorites were his childhood Siamese cat, Sam; Cinnamon, a golden retriever-Collie mix he and Brenda rescued from the pound, and Maverick, a Siamese cat gifted to him for his 34th birthday.

On November 21, 2011 Lloyd passed away at University Medical Center, Las Vegas, Nevada after a long and valiant fight with various health conditions. He was preceded in death by his father, Arlo in November of 2002, his mother, Gwen in April of 2011, and his sister, Cristal in September of 2011. He is survived by his children, Ken and Heather, his step-mother, Wanda Jo and two of his sisters, Terry and Jane. Services were held at Palm Northwest Mortuary and Cemetery.

Content in his routine, Lloyd was the kind of person who enjoyed the company of his family and friends, and was enthusiastic in the pursuit of his hobbies. He will be remembered for his appreciation of games and card playing, his love of Las Vegas and UNLV basketball, and his Kansas City Chiefs. Additionally, his participation in and impact on the racing community will not be forgotten. This is how everyone will remember Lloyd Eugene Thatcher.
